Bruchac, Joseph, “Storytelling and the Sacred: On the Uses of Native American Stories” in The National Storytelling Journal, Spring 1987.  Reminds us to respect the cultural and sacred contexts for stories (applicable to stories from any society).  Contact Orlo for a copy.

 

Caduto, Michael J. and Joseph Bruchac, eds., Keepers of the Earth, Fulcrum, Inc., Golden, CO, 1988, 1989.  Beautifully told Native American stories for teachers to use with children ages 5-12 learning about the earth.  Teacher’s manual available.

Hamilton, Martha and Mitch Weiss, Children Tell Stories: A Teaching Guide, Richard D. Owen Publishers, 135 Katona Ave., Katonah, NY 10536, 1992.  Lots of good ideas, morale boosts, and twenty-five tellable short stories, to start you and your students in storytelling.

 

Jacobs, Joseph, English Fairy Tales, Dover Books, 1967.

 

Sima, Judy,and Kevin Cordi, Raising Voices: Creating Youth Storytelling Groups and Troupes, Libraries Unlimited, Teacher Ideas Press, Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., Westport, CT, 2003.  The latest manual for teachers by two of the most active storytellers who work with children.  A lot of practical help, including tips on taking your troupe on the road, and an excellent bibliography.

 

Smith, Jimmy Neil, ed., Homespun: Tales From American’s Favorite Storytellers, Avon Books, 1988. Besides a great assortment of different kinds of tales, this book gives insights into the lives and approaches of the tellers, plus hints for developing your own stories.

 

Wilson, H.W., publishers, American Storytelling, Vols 1-8, 1986.  Not as good as live storytelling, but each video presents three storytellers.  Available at the SD State Library in Pierre, VC 1321-VC 1328.

 

Yolen, Jane, ed., Favorite Folktales from Around the World, Pantheon Books, N.Y. 1986. Wonderful assortment of tales with an excellent introduction, notes, and original sources.

 

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, by Mem Fox. (Kane/Miller, 1985)  A boy shares memories                                                                      with elders.

 

Zeitlin, Steven J., Amy J. Kotkin, Holly Cutting Bakers, eds., A Celebration of American Family Folklore, Pantheon Books, NY, 1082.  Personal and family stories with suggestions on how to collect your own.
